In Spain, about 24,500 cardiorespiratory arrests occur annuall one every 20 minutes. It is estimated that the survival of people who suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest is reduced by 10% every minute that passes, in this sense, the cases in which the cardiorespiratory arrest is caused by a fibrillation or a pulseless ventricular tachycardia, defibrillation Electricity is the only effective treatment, its earliness being the factor that contributes the most to patient survival. Likewise, the early performance of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) maneuvers by bystanders lengthens the time in which defibrillation is effective and has been shown to double the survival of those affected.
Aware that early action in these cases and with suitable means conditions the prognosis in terms of the recovery of life and the minimization of possible sequelae, the Department of Health of the Xunta de Galicia, "Fundación Pública Urxencias Sanitarias de Galicia- 061", "Cruz Roja" and the Vigo Port Authority have signed a collaboration agreement to promote training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and increase training in the use of semi-automatic defibrillation.
In situations of cardiorespiratory arrest, the immediate availability of technical means such as defibrillators, are essential to successfully tackle resuscitation maneuvers, with the support of health emergencies, thus guaranteeing continuity of care, therefore and within the framework of This project contemplates the installation of external defibrillators in different areas of the port route, creating a security space that allows immediate health care in case of emergency.
The installation of defibrillators (both fixed and mobile) will be carried out at different points of the port authority; ensuring its maintenance and spare parts to guarantee its proper use and availability.
Galicia has been a pioneer in the legislation and implantation of semiautomatic external defibrillators in Spain, thanks to a citizen collaboration program in the care of CRP on public roads called "Acude e Axuda" managed by the Department of Health through the Public Foundation Urxencias Sanitarias de Galicia-061, which seeks citizen help to improve the survival of affected victims through the coordination of volunteers from the 061 coordination center.
Thus, the Vigo Port Authority reaffirms its commitments to healthy lifestyles and the Sustainable Development Goal of the 2030 Agenda: “Goal 3: Guarantee a healthy life and promote well-being for all at all ages”, promoting training and dissemination of knowledge of CPR techniques, with special attention to increasing the number of trained and qualified personnel for the use of the Semiautomatic External Defibrillator, as well as their incorporation into the "Acude e Axuda" Program.
Likewise, all protocols for the safe use of our facilities in relation to the pandemic caused by covid-19 will also be implemented. Working to ensure that the Port of Vigo is a space, in which all safety regulations are met and risks are minimized. As a result, we will have more responsible facilities with our community, providing a safe environment that minimizes health risks for both port workers and the rest of the city's inhabitants who use the port area.
