The landing and commercialization of fresh fish moves around 80,000 tonnes per year in the fish markets of the Vigo fishing port, making it the first fresh fishing port in Europe. Due to its relevance, it is necessary to propose an intervention from a point of view of the energy consumed that analyzes its possibilities for improvement in this area.

For this reason, the objective of the project is to improve the energy efficiency of the Port of Vigo Market, including the renovation of the air conditioning facilities in the auction room of the building, as well as carrying out actions in the envelope that allow reducing the energy demand of this area of the building. Actions are also carried out on the lighting system, and the project will be complemented by the implementation of a self-consumption photovoltaic solar installation, which allows generating a large part of the energy consumed in the building itself.


The real needs of the port will be studied in order to determine the optimal combination of available energy technologies:

  • Replacement of existing luminaires with high energy efficiency lights (LED) and an intelligent smart greed system for managing electrical efficiency.
  • Installation of a 148 kW photovoltaic renewable energy contribution system.
  • Energy storage system for night consumption (Useful Capacity: 544.32 kWh).
  • Marine geothermal energy (in the market).

Expected results

In general, through the implementation of the project, it is expected to increase energy efficiency, reduce emissions, and reduce the energy costs of the fishing port.

More specifically, it is expected:

  • Reduce emissions by 37%.
  • Fishmarket and market operation with at least 20% solar energy for self-consumption.
  • First marine geothermal pilot in a fish market and / or market.


Green port: through the implementation of this project it is possible to reduce energy consumption, as well as the carbon footprint of the Port of Vigo. In this way, the Port tries to be more sustainable in its activities and contributes to the fight against climate change.

Current state

The project is currently under execution. Several energy efficiency measures have already been implemented in the fishing port facilities that will save energy consumption.
