The underwater viewer installed by the Port of Vigo in the dock of A Laxe, in front of the Portocultura building, has accumulated more than 7,000 visits since its opening to the city last March 24.
The "Nautilus" can be visited free of charge on Fridays, from 4 to 8 pm; and on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, from 10 am to 1 pm and from 4 to 8 pm. Visits to the observatory are guided.
Also, with the aim of raising awareness of the importance of caring for the sea and oceans among young people, visits are organized with schools in Vigo and its area. These visits, which take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays, are complemented with workshops and educational activities to promote knowledge and understanding of the marine ecosystems of the Port of Vigo and its inhabitants, including the species of the coastal area and the seabed, in a playful way.
In addition, the viewer opens its doors for the use and observation of the scientific world. Likewise, visits are organized for groups, such as the one that took place this morning with a representation of the FAVEC, led by its president, María Pérez, and in which also participated the president of the Port Authority of Vigo, Jesús Vázquez Almuiña.
The observatory, 19 meters long, is part of a set of 300m2 of surface that includes 3 pontoons and two access ramps at street level. Next to it, 330m2 of nature-inclusive design panels developed by ECOncrete have been installed, recreating natural habitats and equipped with underwater recording cameras 24 hours a day. This entire floating corridor will allow the public to contemplate the flora and fauna, both intertidal and underwater, that surrounds the port coastline and that will colonize these innovative structures in the coming months. The new viewer and the innovative structures that complement it seek to convert the docks of the Port of Vigo in ecological places.
It is part of the actions framed in the Living Ports project, winner of the popularly known as the "Oscar of the Environment" in 2022 and recognized a few days ago in the first edition of the "World Maritime Week Awards" (World Maritime Week Awards) in the category of "Port of the Future" (Futureport), as it is a unique observation and monitoring tool.

The HYDEA project, which is funded by the Interreg Atlantic Area 2021-2027 programme, was set up to boost the hydrogen transition in the Atlantic Area ports. During the second year of the project, the 10 members of the consortium committed into structuring methods that will enable the development of valuable tools such as action plans for ports and a decision-making tool based on real case studies. HYDEA partners have also launched three calls to provide access to their experimental facilities and expertise to support the development and testing of pre-commercial, innovative technologies.
The Port of Vigo continues to strengthen its leadership in innovation and sustainability, with two of its projects selected as finalists for the IAPH Sustainability Awards 2025, the prestigious prizes granted by the International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH), the world’s largest port network.
