TUTATIS nZE - Tutatis Zero emissions in Cíes Islands

Status

In progress

Description

The Blue Growth Plan of the European Union is a long-term strategy to support the sustainable growth of maritime sectors. In this framework, the Blue Energy is one of the fundamental and transversal work areas. Renewable resources such as solar radiation, wind and marine energies contribute to a more competitive and sustainable development of the Port of Vigo’s sectors and its area of influence.

The project “TUTATIS –nZE Cies” aims to achieve energy self-sufficiency in the Cíes Islands by:

  • 100% renewable energy generation, in terms of electricity and thermal demand.
  • Using the surplus to guarantee a total sustainable mobility and zero CO2 and NOx emissions.

The project will create in the Cíes Islands a sustainable system integrated in the natural environment, capable of covering the energy and water demand in the islands by using natural resources. This will be a relevant technological and sustainability challenge because of the application of renewable energy technologies, remote control and remote management technology based on artificial intelligence techniques, communications technology and distributed control of smart micro-grids, applied in an environment with climatic difficulties (marine environment) and accessibility. All must be compatible with the environment to minimize its impact.

It will be shown how the application of monitoring technology, control and artificial intelligence in the operation and maintenance of mobility systems and generation of renewable energy minimizes the impact generated by the development of human activity, in the natural environment.

To achieve these objectives, the project focuses on the study, development and implementation of different technologies and systems, all of them interconnected and communicated with each other to cover the energy demands of the Cies Islands and to make the project and results accessible to citizens. Specifically, the project will achieve:

  • Electricity generation.
  • Storage of electric power and electric vehicles’ network.
  • Thermal generation.
  • Electrical network. Smart Grid system.
  • Emergency power supply.
  • A control system.

The project has 5 main Work Packages:

  • WP 1: Data collection and demand monitoring.
  • WP 2: Model simulation. Selection of technologies.
  • WP 3: Engineering and projects.
  • WP 4: Supply, installation and implementation.
  • WP 5: Operation & Maintenance

Expected Results

The results of the project will serve as an example of how it is possible to make islands 100% self-sufficient in a sustainable way, generating energy from renewable systems and managing the operation through by using the latest technologies. The main results to be achieved are:

  • Making the islands self-sufficient in a sustainable way in terms of energy, through a 100% renewable electricity and thermal supply, without altering the environment.
  • Elimination of fossil fuels from the islands with greater environmental risk.
  • Take advantage of periods of low energy demand to generate and store drinking water that can be used in times of higher demand.
  • Ensure a complete sustainable mobility with electric vehicles. Install the Smart Grid system in the electrical network to optimize the use of energy.
  • Apply intensively the technology of monitoring, control and artificial intelligence in the O & M.
  • Make the system accessible to citizens and visitors through the social networks.

Contribution

- Green and Innovative Objective: Green and Innovative Islands committed to "Blue Energy", because it will contribute to the use of sustainable renewable energies, with very low impact and pollution rates. In addition, it would contribute to promote a green, sustainable and respectful tourism in the islands.

- Inclusive Objective: Inclusive Islands by strengthening, through the incorporation of renewable energies, the creation of a new professional activity around the renewable energy sector.

Current State

The WP1 - initial data collection has been initiated in order to delve into the knowledge of energy demand and the energy alternatives. This process was developed jointly between APVIGO and PN Illas Atlánticas, with the technical collaboration of INSTRA. The final project will be dimensioned based on the conclusions of this preliminary study.

Immediately it is necessary:

  •           Ensure the necessary financial resources to complete the study that is underway.

  •           Ensure the financial resources necessary to start the project definitively.
