Description

The ports and navigation canals are essential for the global economy, which various productive, logistic and industrial activities depend on. Some of the activities linked to port are maritime transport, shipbuilding, fishing, sports or cruise ships.

However, the development of these economic activities over time brought with it a series of environmental consequences, as result of pollution by hydrocarbons, marine litter, dredges and landfills, organic pollution, etc. The most relevant consequences of these factors include the loss or fragmentation of habitats, water quality decreasement and impacts on marine organisms.

Expected results

-Good and balanced conditions state for Vigo’s docklands marine ecosystems and to promote the vegetal and animal species growth.

Contribution

- Green port: to promote marine life, by recovering ecosystems throuegh innovative measures. 

- Innovative port: Port Greening also contemplates innovative technological solutions development, such as nanotechnology and ecological dredges.

Current state

Ecological dredging and CO2 capture have recently nailed down as projects and been submitted for funding calls or are currently working on their identification. The remaining lines are in the preparation phase to be proposed for possible future calls.
